Women's basketball cruises to 73-43 victory over Carroll

- The Thunder women's basketball team rebounded from Saturday's last minute defeat to cruise past Carroll 73-43 on Wednesday night in King Arena. The game was Wheaton's first home game in over a month as the Thunder improved to 5-0 on the season on their home floor. Wheaton is now 10-3 on the season and 4-1 in the CCIW ahead of Saturday's home matchup against Millikin. Carroll falls to 1-12 with the loss and 1-4 in the CCIW.

Wheaton shot 40.6% (28-69) from the field including a 35% (7-20) success-rate from beyond the arc. Wheaton did struggle at the free throw line, shooting just 50% (10-20) on the night. Carroll was held to 31.1% (14-45) from the field and 37.5% (6-16) from the three-point line. The Pioneers were 52.9% (9-17) from the free throw line. Wheaton outrebounded the Pioneers 48-30 including a 17-3 edge on the offensive glass.

25410Chantal Meacham and Katie McDaniels (PICTURED RIGHT) led the Thunder with 20 points and 15 points respectively, and each reached a career milestone. McDaniels scored five of her points from the free throw line, becoming the first player in Wheaton women's basketball history to have 500 made free throws in a career. McDaniels set the Wheaton school record for made free throws in Wheaton's win over Whitworth on December 30. Meacham connected on six three-pointers bringing her career total to 201 made three-pointers, making her just the second player in program history with at least 200 made three-pointers. Rachel Horgen owns the school record with 206 career made three-pointers.

The Pioneers opened the game with a 5-0 lead in the first minute of play but Wheaton seized control of the game with a 14-0 run that saw Carroll held without a field goal for a stretch of nearly six minutes. Meacham's second three-pointer of the night gave the Thunder a 23-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Wheaton pushed the lead to 22 points early in the second quarter but a field goal drought of nearly four minutes brought the Pioneers back to within 12 and allowed them to cut the halftime lead down to 37-24.

A low-scoring third quarter for both teams allowed Wheaton to extend the lead to 20 points at the end of the third quarter. Wheaton held the Pioneers without a basket for the first six minutes and 20 seconds as the Thunder opened the quarter on a 16-1 run to coast to the 73-43 victory.

Chantal Meacham scored a game and season-high 20 points and Katie McDaniels added 15 points and four steals. Maggie Dansdill filled the stat sheet with nine points with six rebounds and four steals. Brittney Wald led the Pioneers with 13 points.
