Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton Thunder women's soccer team opened its season on Friday night in the opening evening of the 2016 Bob Baptista Invitational with a matchup against second-ranked Washington University-St. Louis. The Bears used a late second-half goal to earn a 1-0 victory.
The final day of the season-opening tournament will feature two more matches on Saturday. WashU will face Hanover College at 4:30 p.m. and Wheaton will host Hope in the final match on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Hope topped Hanover 6-1 on Friday afternoon in the opening match of the weekend.
Wheaton had a few scoring opportunities in the first half as WashU goalkeeper Lizzy Crist made a stop and the Bears defense got in front of Wheaton's best scoring opportunity in the half. The Thunder and Bears went to halftime in a scoreless tie as WashU held a 7-3 edge in shots.
WashU's Megan Renken flicked in a header from a cross by teammate Katie Chandler at the 79-minute mark to give the guests a 1-0 advantage. The Bears earned the shutout victory thanks to the late goal.
WashU out-shot Wheaton 16-4 tonight and owned a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Bears posted a 4-1 edge in corner kicks tonight.

Kathryn McGregor made four saves and allowed just Renken's second-half goal. Crist made one save as the Bears' defense recorded the shutout.
