Wheaton baseball drops season finale in 3-2 loss at Illinois Wesleyan

Carol Stream, Ill.- The Thunder baseball team had its season ended on Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 loss at Illinois Wesleyan. The loss officially eliminates Wheaton from contention for next week's CCIW Tournament. The Thunder wrap up the season 23-17 overall and 10-11 in conference play.

Wheaton tallied two runs on eight hits with no errors while the Titans plated three runs on 12 hits with two errors. Josh Arevalo surrendered three earned runs while striking out five over six innings of work. Nick Johnson allowed just one hit over the final two innings to lower his season ERA to 1.07. Johnson did not allow an earned run in conference play over 14.2 innings of relief work.

The Titans took the game's first lead with two runs in the bottom of the third inning before a rain delay brought the game to a halt for roughly 45 minutes. Wheaton would provide its biggest threat in the top of the sixth inning when consecutive singles by Jon Metz and John McKenna and a walk to Kyle Trivits loaded the bases with one out. a strikeout and a ground out kept the Thunder off the scoreboard and trailing 2-0 after six innings.

Ben Brittain put the visitors on the board with a sacrifice fly that scored Andrew Laucella to half the Titans' lead. Jon Metz followed with his third hit of the game to plate Kyle Mellinger and tie the game at 2-2. Illinois Wesleyan would answer with a run in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead. Wheaton could not muster a rally in the final two innings to fall 3-2.

Jon Metz and Jacob Zeller paced the Thunder offense with three hits apiece.
