The Thunder softball team sweeps North Park to extend win streak to six games

Wheaton, Ill. –
The Thunder softball team extended its win streak to six games on Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of North Park (3-20, 0-4 CCIW) on Tuesday at Ruth Leedy Field. Wheaton won the opener 8-0 and closed out the sweep with a 23-9 victory in the nightcap. Wheaton (18-4, 4-0 CCIW) will travel to Elmhurst at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday for a doubleheader with the Bluejays.

Wheaton shut out North Park 8-0 in tonight's first game as the Thunder scored eight runs, on six hits, with no errors and the Vikings scored no runs, on two hits, with one error. Katie Thornton (12-3) earned the win in five scoreless innings as she scattered two hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. She helped her own cause going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and one run.

21030Emily Bonga was 1-for-2 in the game and Christina Sandstedt was 1-for-1 with a double. Megan Neuhaus drove in a pair of runs with a triple and Ellen Radandt (PICTURED LEFT) hit a double in the game and scored twice.

Wheaton earned the 23-9 victory in the second game of the day as the Thunder scored 23 runs, on 17 hits, with seven errors and North Park scored nine runs, on 10 hits with seven errors. Thunder starting pitcher Kendall Kehres pitched 2-2/3 innings as she allowed six runs, including three earned runs on seven hits. Abby Butler worked one inning of relief as she allowed two unearned runs, on no hits with one walk. Katie Thornton pitched 2-1/3 innings of relief as she allowed one run, on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Thunder belted seven home runs in the game. Katie Thornton was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scores. Radandt was 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs. Sandstedt was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double as she scored four times and drove in four runs. Lyndsey Pritchard had a 2-for-4 outing with five RBI and three runs scored as she hit two home runs. Katie Yergler was 2-for-5 with one home run as she drove in three runs and scored twice. Kelly Thornton and Julia Arthur added home runs for Wheaton in the win.

Note Worthy: The 23 runs tallied by the Thunder in the nightcap is the most runs scored by Wheaton in a CCIW game since a 23-0 victory against North Park in 1995...the seven home runs hit by the Thunder in the second outing is the most by any Division III team in a game this season and it is tied for the fourth-highest single-game mark in Division III history.
