The Thunder baseball team falls to North Central at home in the series opener

Carol Stream, Ill. - The Wheaton baseball team (19-12, 7-6 CCIW) opened its three-game weekend series against #21-ranked North Central (21-5, 9-4 CCIW) on Friday night with an 11-3 loss at home to the Cardinals. This weekend's series is key for both team's aspirations of earning a spot in the upcoming CCIW Tournament that takes the top four teams in the league at the conclusion of the regular season; and their respective hopes for a CCIW Championship. The series is set to conclude on Saturday with a noon doubleheader in Naperville.

North Central enters tomorrow's twinbill with a 9-4 CCIW record and a one-game lead in the CCIW standings. Illinois Wesleyan is 8-5 in league play, followed by Augustana at 7-5, Wheaton is 7-6, Carthage is fifth at 6-6, Elmhurst follows at 5-7, North Park is 4-8 in conference action and Millikin is eighth at 4-9.

The Cardinals scored in batches tonight, tallying all 11 runs in just three innings. NCC broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning with three runs, scored three runs in the top of the eighth and the guests tallied five runs in the top of the ninth inning. Wheaton registered all three of its runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Cardinals scored 11 runs, on nine hits, with two errors and Wheaton registered three runs, on six hits with one error.

21078North Central starter Jordan Van Dyck had a strong outing tonight in improving to 4-0 in eight innings. Van Dyck held Wheaton scoreless, on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Michael Sweeney faced one batter to earn a strikeout. Alex Schell worked 2/3 of an inning, allowing three runs, including two earned runs, on one hit with one walk.

Thunder starter Daniel Bayer (2-2) pitched 7-1/3 innings as he allowed six runs, on six hits, with five walks and a hit batter. Reliever Josiah Longenecker worked one innings, allowing four runs, including three earned runs. Caleb Selk pitched 2/3 of an inning as he allowed one run, on two hits.

Jacob Zeller was 2-for-4 with a walk in the contest, hitting a double. Freshman center fielder Nick Mailman (PICTURED LEFT) was 2-for-5 with three RBI as he hit a three-run triple in the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Clay Morrison was 1-for-1 at the plate with a ninth-inning single.
