The Thunder women's basketball team bows out of the NCAA Tournament in a First Round loss at UW-River Falls

The Thunder women's basketball team had its season ended on Friday night with an 81-56 loss at UW-River Falls (23-5) in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament. Wheaton ends the year with a 22-6 record.

This year's campaign was the 11th 20-win season in program history and the third in the last four seasons. The 22 victories posted by the Thunder this season is tied for the third-highest single-season win total in program history.

Head coach Kent Madsen said of his team's season, "When I look over the entirety of our season, I am extremely proud of our team. When we lost a player like Ellie Zeller just before conference season the team battled through that. We also had some other players that were injured along the way and we constantly had to mix up our lineup and people just kept doing their job to get us to the point where we make the NCAA Tournament."

20729The Thunder head coach concluded, "I have to say that I am extremely proud of our seniors this year. I believe that they are the first group of Wheaton seniors that has been to three NCAA Tournaments. That speaks to what they have brought to this team over the years and the sacrifices that they have made to be a part of this team over a four-year period. I just want to tell our seniors how much I appreciate each and every one of them."

Katie McDaniels led the Thunder with 17 points and she added two steals. Sophomore Kelly Lawson (PICTURED LEFT) scored 11 points for Wheaton, making a trio of three-pointers. Junior guard Chantal Meacham scored eight points with two assists.

Wheaton shot 27.9% (17-of-61) from the field, including 24% (6-of-25) from three-point range. The Falcons shot 56.1% (32-of-57) field goal percentage, including 46.2% (6-of-13) from three-point range. Wheaton recorded a 59.3% (16-of-27) free throw percentage and the Falcons shot 73.3% (11-of-15) at the charity stripe.

20421Kate Theisen led the Falcons with 21 points and nine rebounds. Brynn Liljander scored 20 points with five assists.

NOTEWORTHY: Senior Hannah Considine (PICTURED RIGHT) posted a 55.1% (114-of-207) field goal percentage this season, the sixth-highest single-season field goal percentage in school history…Considine departs the Wheaton program ranked 18th in program history with 1,046 career points and she is eighth in program history with 619 career rebounds…fellow senior Ellie Zeller concludes her Thunder career ranked 14th in program history with 1,062 points…McDaniels moved into eighth place on Wheaton's career points list tonight as she has 1,194 career points to jump ahead of Jane Nelson (1,182 points)…McDaniels' 459 points this season is the sixth-highest single-season scoring total in program history…McDaniels' 134 assists this year ranks sixth on Wheaton's single-season assists list.
