The Thunder baseball team picks up home wins against Edgewood and Carroll

The Wheaton Thunder baseball team won a pair of games on Saturday afternoon to cap a 3-0 weekend for the hosts at Lee Pfund Stadium. Wheaton topped Edgewood 9-3 in today's mid-afternoon game and the Thunder capped the weekend with a 6-1 victory against Carroll University. Wheaton (10-6) hosts Benedictine on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.

The Thunder earned a 9-3 victory against Edgewood in today's first game as Wheaton scored nine runs, on 12 hits with one error and the Eagles plated three runs, on five hits with two errors. Peter Moran (2-1) earned the win in six innings of work. Moran allowed one earned run, on four hits, with two walks and three strikeouts. Daniel Bayer picked up the save in three innings of relief. Bayer allowed two earned runs, on one hit, with five strikeouts and three walks.

20973Shortstop John McKenna (PICTURED LEFT) was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Designated hitter Andrew Laucella was 2-for-3 with three RBI, hitting a pair of doubles. Ben Brittan and Jacob Zeller each hit 2-for-4 in the game with one RBI.

Wheaton took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kyle Mellinger drove in a run with a RBI-triple and Laucella drove Mellinger home with a RBI-double. The Eagles cut Wheaton's lead to 2-1 with a run for the guests in the top of the sixth inning.

Wheaton opened up the scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning with five runs to extend its lead to 7-1. A sacrifice bunt by Nick Mailman started Wheaton's scoring in the inning and Zeller followed with a RBI-double. Ben Brittain added a RBI-single and Laucella drove in two runs with a double to right field.

Outfielder Seth Meyer hit a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to increase the hosts' lead to 9-1. The Eagles scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to account for the 9-3 final score.

21014Wheaton closed out the day with a 6-1 victory against Carroll. The Thunder scored six runs, on 11 hits, with one error and the Pioneers scored one run, on five hits, with two errors. Senior Michael Kaufman (2-1) had a strong outing to earn the complete game win in nine innings of work. Kaufman allowed just one earned run, on five hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.

McKenna was 2-for-4 in the game with a home run over the left field fence. McKenna drove in two runs and scored twice. Mailman (PICTURED RIGHT) was 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored.

In the nightcap against the Pioneers, Wheaton struck early with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Mailman hit a leadoff single for the Thunder and Zeller followed with a single to leftfield that sent Mailman to second base. Mailman scampered to third base on a Carroll wild pitch to put runners at the corners. Mellinger was at the plate when Zeller stole second base and on the Pioneers' throw to second base Mailman stole home to score the go-ahead run for a 1-0 Wheaton lead.

21015The Pioneers manufactured a run in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Wheaton countered in the bottom of the seventh inning with two runs to take a 3-1 lead as well-executed bunts aided Wheaton in the inning. Mailman drove in a run with a RBI-bunt single and a sacrifice bunt by Zeller (PICTURED LEFT) drove in Wheaton's second run of the inning to give the hosts a 3-1 advantage.

Wheaton added three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Jon Metz led off the eighth with a pinch hit double to right centerfield. Josh Kimmel hit a RBI-single and then McKenna followed with the two-run home run over the left field fence to account for Wheaton's 6-1 victory.
