Wheaton baseball splits doubleheader against Cornell and Aurora

. - The Thunder baseball team wrapped up its round robin tournament on Saturday by splitting a doubleheader at Lee Pfund Stadium. Wheaton opened the day with a 2-1 victory over Cornell and closed the day with a 3-2 loss to Aurora. Wheaton is now 7-6 overall.

Josh Arevalo pitched around a leadoff double by the Rams in the top of the first inning and Wheaton answered in the bottom of the first inning just three batters into the game. Jacob Zeller opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a single by Jon Metz. Zeller then came around to score on an RBI single by Andrew Laucella.

That would be the only run scored until Wheaton tallied an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning when John McKenna's single plated JD Carpenter to make it 2-0. The Rams finally got to Arevalo for one run in the top of the ninth inning but the senior righty closed the door for the 2-1 victory.

Arevalo went the distance for the hosts, allowing seven hits and striking out seven with just two walks. Jon Metz led the Thunder offense with three hits.

In the nightcap against Aurora, Wheaton took a 1-0 lead when Brett Albaugh came into to score on an errant throw following his steal of third base. The Spartans answered with three runs in the top of the fifth inning following a controversial play at the plate that allowed the inning to continue.

Wheaton rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning when Zeller and McKenna reached to leadoff the inning and moved into scoring postion on Kyle Trivits' sacrifice bunt. Nick Mailman's sacrifice fly brought home Zeller but McKenna was cut down at third to end the game.

Wheaton will next be in action on Friday when the Thunder host Edgewood at 5 PM.
