Illinois Wesleyan edges Wheaton, 2-1 in the CCIW Tournament Championship Match

Wheaton, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan Titans topped the Thunder women's soccer team 2-1 on Saturday in the 2016 CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament Championship Match. Illinois Wesleyan (12-5-3) secured the conference's automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament with tonight's victory. Wheaton is now (12-8-0) on the season.

The Titans will find out on Monday, Nov. 7 at 12:30 p.m. (CST) who and where they will play when the NCAA announces the bracket for the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament at www.ncaa.com. Wheaton, ranked fourth in the most recent NCAA Central Region poll,  will also find out if it earns an at-large bid to the national tournament when the brackets are announced on Monday.

Illinois Wesleyan gained the lead at the 27:26 mark of the match when Amanda Kaiser scored from in front of the near post when she scored on a cross by Skyler Tomko. Kaiser's goal allowed the Titans to hold a 1-0 lead at the halftime intermission. The Titans out-shot Wheaton 7-5 in the first half, including a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal.

Wheaton scored early in the second half as Morgan Whitman headed the ball into the net off of an Anna Saunders corner kick at the 48:45 mark of the match. Whitman's goal tied the match at 1-1. Illinois Wesleyan's Jordan Ellerbrock gave the Titans a 2-1 lead at 64:02 when she scored on a cross from Flower Edgington. The Titans held on for the final 25-plus minutes of the match to earn the 2-1 victory and their second CCIW Tournament Championship.

Wheaton goalkeeper Kathryn McGregor made four saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes of work. Illinois Wesleyan goalkeeper Katie Denney allowed one goal in her 90 minute of action.
Each team had 12 shots in the match, with the Titans holding a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. Wheaton was awarded four corner kicks in the contest and Wheaton had three.
