The Thunder volleyball team shuts out Carroll 3-0 in CCIW play

The Wheaton volleyball team earned a decisive 3-0 conference victory at Carroll University (6-16, 0-4 CCIW) on Tuesday night. Wheaton opened with a 25-14 victory in the first set, topped the Pioneers 25-10 in the second and the Thunder closed out the match with a 25-17 win in the third set.

22956Senior outside hitter Shelby Knowles led the Thunder with eight kills and Katie Rohrer (PICTURED LEFT) added seven kills, with Madeline Moore contributing six kills. Setter Ashley Torok had 18 assists in the match and sophomore libero Jessica Bosse led the Thunder with 15 digs. 

The Thunder posted an impressive .299 hitting percentage on the night, led by a mark of .667 from Rohrer and .500 by Meghan Lacey to go with a mark of .333 by Knowles. Wheaton had just two service reception errors on 33 attempts in the match.

Head coach Brittany Smith noted after the match, "The players have been working hard on maintaining focus and cleaning up technical aspects of our play. It was fantastic to see those things come together in such a dominating fashion. It's great momentum for us as we move into the second half of conference play."

Wheaton earned a 25-14 victory thanks to a strong effort in the middle portion of the set. The Pioneers led the Thunder 9-7 when Wheaton responded with seven consecutive points to give the guests a 14-9 lead. The Thunder extended the lead to 21-12 in earning the win. Moore and Rohrer each had three kills in the set and Bosse led the squad with four digs.

The Thunder dominated Carroll in earning the 25-10 victory in the second set. Wheaton scored the first four points of the set and jumped out to a 10-1 lead as the guests never trailed in the set. Rohrer and Lacey each registered four kills in the set and Torok distributed nine assists. Bosse again paced the defense with four digs.

22826The Thunder closed out the win in earning the 25-17 victory in the third set. The set was tied at 4-4 when the Thunder put together an 8-2 surge to take a 12-6 lead. The Thunder never trailed after that run. Knowles (PICTURED RIGHT) recorded three kills in the set and Kelly Thornton had a team-high five assists in the set. Bosse closed out the match with seven digs in the final set. 

Wheaton improves to 7-12 overall and 2-2 in the CCIW. The Thunder will participate in the Midwest Invitational, co-hosted by Hope College and Calvin College this weekend. The Thunder will face fifth-ranked Hope and Heidelberg College on Friday in Holland, Michigan. Wheaton will close out its participation in the tournament on Saturday in Grand Rapids, Michigan with matches against top-ranked Calvin College and Ohio Wesleyan University.
