Elmhurst, Ill. – The Thunder volleyball spilt a pair of matches for the second consecutive day at the season-opening Elmhurst Invitational. St. Mary's (Ind.) topped the Thunder 3-2 (27-25, 25-14, 26-28, 14-25, 15-9) in
Wheaton's first match of the day. The Thunder closed out the tournament with another five-set matchup against Edgewood College. Wheaton won the first two sets against the Eagles 25-19 and 25-22. Edgewood rallied with 25-23 and 25-14 victories in the next two sets before the Thunder emerged with a 15-11 victory in the decisive fifth set.
Junior
Shelby Knowles averaged 4.11 kills per set and 2.61 digs per set this weekend as she earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
In the contest against St. Mary's Knowles tallied 22 kills and 16 digs.
Sydney Vischer contributed nine kills and 16 digs and
Hannah Japp added seven kills. Freshman setter
Kelly Thornton tallied 33 assists and senior
Kelli Manning had a team-high 20 digs.
Knowles recorded 12 kills and 10 digs in the victory against Edgewood. Vischer and Japp each had nine kills while
Juliana Sudfeld recorded seven kills. Thornton tallied 40 assists, six kills and 11 digs. Manning was credited with 37 in the victory. Japp and Sudfeld each had four total blocks, including three solos.
The Thunder will travel to Lake Forest College on Tuesday night for a matchup with the Forester. Wheaton will compete at the Loras College Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
