Wheaton, Ill. - The Thunder men's soccer team celebrated it's return to the Top 25 on Tuesday night with a first half goal barrage that lead to a 4-0 win over Greenville College. Slotted at #22 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll earlier on Tuesday afternoon, Wheaton scored all four goals in a ten minute stretch of the first half including three from
Marshall Hollingsworth to improve to 6-2-1 on the season and push its unbeaten streak to six games. Hollingsworth scored the first two goals and capped off his night with length of the field run to score the final goal of the match. Greenville falls to 4-7 on the season with the loss.
Wheaton outshot the Panthers 25-8 on the nigh tincluding an 11-3 edge in shots on goal.
Matt Paprocki made a save on all three shots he faced in his second consecutive clean sheet. Greenville's Ian Hodge allowed four goals and made six saves.
The match featured little in the way of scoring threats early in the match until
Marshall Hollingsworth lost a defender at the top of the box and bent the ball inside the far post to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead at 22:30. Wheaton quickly rushed down the field with a steal and following a deflected shot by
Elliot Borge,
Hollingsworth scored unassisted on a beautiful, twisting corner kick to make it 2-0 just 12 seconds after his first goal.
Several minutes later, Hollingsworth took a beautiful pass in the middle of the box and fired a shot that was saved by Hodge but rolled softly towards the left post where
Josh Greene was there to knock the ball into the net to make it 3-0 Thunder at the 30:08 mark. Just over a minute later, a Greenville free kick into the box was cleared away and
Hollingsworth collected the clearance and raced the length of the field to beat Hodge and make it 4-0.
The Thunder controlled the possession throughout the remainder of the contest and had several prime chances to push the lead further but several nice defensive plays by the Panthers in the second half managed to keep the score at 4-0.
Wheaton will next be in action on Saturday, October 3, when the Thunder open CCIW action with a 3:30 pm matchup at Elmhurst.
Note Worthy: With his first goal,
Marshall Hollingsworth became just the 20th player in program history to reach the 30-goal plateau in his career...Hollingsworth's hat trick was the first for Wheaton since
Stephen Golz scored three goals in the first ten minutes of a match at Montclair State last season.
