Kenosha, Wis. – The Thunder softball team opened conference play on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader under cold and wet conditions at Carthage College. Wheaton broke a scoreless tie with seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to earn a 7-3 victory in the opener. The Thunder picked up a 9-1 win in the second game to complete the sweep.
Today's two wins against Carthage (8-11, 2-2 CCIW) marks Wheaton's first sweep of the Lady Reds since 2007. Wheaton is now 12-9 on the year and 2-0 in conference play. Wheaton will travel to Benedictine on Thursday for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader against the Eagles. The Thunder returns home on Saturday for doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. against Millikin.

The Thunder won the opener 7-3 as Wheaton scored seven runs, on 11 hits, with no errors and Carthage tallied three runs, on eight hits, with four errors. Thunder starting pitcher (7-5)
Katie Thornton earned the win in eight innings. Thornton scattered eight hits, allowing three runs, with three strikeouts.
Lyndsey Pritchard was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Alyssa Leonard (PICTURED LEFT) was 2-for-5 with a home run.
The two teams battled through seven scoreless innings to send the game to an eighth inning. Wheaton reached the scoreboard in the top of the eighth with a solo home run by
Ellen Radandt.
Becky Leone continued the scoring with a two-run double, an additional two runs scored on a Carthage error and Leonard drove in two runs in the inning on a home run. Carthage attempted a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning with three runs, but could not complete the rally for the Thunder win.

Wheaton topped the Lady Reds 9-1 in the second game thanks to a seven-run fourth inning. The Thunder scored nine runs, on 14 hits, with no errors and Carthage plated one run, on five hits, with two errors. Thornton started the game for the guests as she held Carthage scoreless with one hit.
Abby Butler (5-1) earned the win in four innings of relief. Butler scattered four hits, allowing one run, with two strikeouts and one walk. Senior
Ellen Radandt was 4-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
Christina Sandstedt (PICTURED RIGHT) was 3-for-3 with a double and a run driven in.
Alyssa Leonard was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
Wheaton took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Radandt drove in a run with a RBI-single. Carthage tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning with a run.
Wheaton broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth as the Thunder scored seven runs to take an 8-1 lead. Thornton drove in two runs with a single and Sandstedt hit a RBI-double. Leonard and Radandt each hit RBI-singles, while
Lyndsey Pritchard drove in a run as well. The Thunder secured the eight-run win in the bottom of the fifth inning on a RBI-single by Radandt.
