Benedictine rallies in the ninth to top Wheaton 3-2

- The Wheaton baseball team had its five-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night after Benedictine rallied in the ninth to steal a 3-2 victory. The Eagles scored all three runs in the bottom of the ninth to walkoff with the win. Wheaton rallied in the bottom of the ninth to earn a walkoff win in the previous matchup between the two teams in March. With the loss, Wheaton falls to 18-19 while Benedictine improves to 17-20.

Wheaton scored two runs on six hits with two errors. The Eagles scored three runs on three hits with on error. Wheaton surrendered just three hits for the second straight game. Josh Arevalo earned the tough-luck loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Ty Hoeksema struck out one in one-third of an inning.

Wheaton jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first when Matt Schappell singled on the game's first pitch and came around to score two batters later on Kyle Mellinger's double. Josh Kimmel gave Wheaton a 2-0 lead with an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning.

Josh Arevalo was in control on the mound for the Thunder, allowing just one hit through the first eight innings. After surrendering a bunt single in the home half of the third inning, Arevalo set down 17 consecutive batters before a leadoff walk to start the ninth inning. A pair of singles, two walks, one intentional, and two Thunder errors allowed the Eagles to plate three runs to take the victory.

Matt Schappell collected three hits for the Thunder giving him a hit in seven consecutive at-bats. Schappell, Mellinger and Tyler Sigler eached doubled for the Thunder.

Wheaton will return to conference play on Friday night when the Thunder travel to Bloomington to take open a three-game series with Illinois Wesleyan at 5 PM.
