Carol Stream, Ill. - The Thunder baseball has now dropped seven straight games after an 8-7 extra innings loss to Buena Vista and a 12-8 loss to Aurora on Saturday at Lee Pfund Stadium. Wheaton is now 4-11 on the season Buena Vista improves to 10-1 and Aurora to 10-6. Wheaton will host Benedictine at 6 PM on Tuesday night.
In the opener, the Thunder scored seven runs on nine hits with two errors while Buena Vista racked up eight runs on 17 hits with two errors. Wheaton scored eight runs on 12 hits with four errors in the nightcap while Aurora scored 12 runs on 14 hits with one error.
Wheaton fell behind early against the Beavers as Buena Vista rallied with two outs to push across three runs. Wheaton answered with three runs in the bottom half of the first on an RBI double by
Kyle Mellinger, a sacrifice fly by
Johnny Peltz and an RBI single to center by
Andrew Laucella. Buena Vista retook the lead in the top of the second when a tailor-made inning-ending double play ball struck the field umpire, allowing Buena Vista to take a 4-3 lead. The lead extended to 6-3 in the top of the fourth and then to 7-3 in the top of the eighth.
Wheaton rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning when
Tyler Sigler drove a hanging curveball over the left field wall for a three-run home run to cut the score to 7-6. The home run was the first of Sigler's collegiate career. Wheaton would tie the game in the bottom of the ninth when
JD Carpenter reached on an error and was sacrificed to second base by
Josh Kimmel.
Matt Schappell wlecomed the Buena Vista closer with a single to right field to plate Carpenter to tie the game at seven. Buena Vista would push across a run in the top of the 10th and Wheaton could not answer in the home half despite an
Alex MaLossi single and stolen base.
Josh Kimmel and
Kyle Mellinger each had two hits for the Thunder in the opener and
Matt Krause scored two runs.
Aurora raced out to a big lead in the first three innings of the nightcap. The Spartans pushed across one run in the top of the first and four runs each in the second and third innings.
Kyle Trivits' RBI single in the bottom of the second inning accounted for Wheaton's run during the opening third of the game. Aurora added a run in the top of the fourth inning but Wheaton answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a Sigler RBI groundout to set the score at 10-2. A two-out error led to a Thunder run in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Spartans pushed their lead to 12-3 with two runs in the top of the eighth.
Wheaton rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI double by Mellinger, an RBI single by MaLossi and an RBI triple by Sigler to plate three runs and cut the lead to 12-6. A
Matt Krause sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth and an RBI pinch-hit single by
Andrew Laucella accounted for the final 12-8 score.
Kimmel, Mellinger and Krause each had multi-hit games in the nightcap.
