Wes Cannonier has been named to this week's D3football.com Team of the Week for his efforts in Wheaton's 31-0 shutout of Elmhurst last Saturday. The Thunder safety had a pair of interceptions against the Bluejays and also had three solo takles, including one tackle for lost yardage (-6 yards).
On Elmhurst's second drive of the football game, Cannonier picked off an Elmhurst pass at the Wheaton 37-yard line and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown to give Wheaton a 14-0 lead. Cannonier picked off another Elmhurst pass in the fourth quarter as he helped preserve the shutout for the Wheaton defense. He also had a tackle for lost yardage of minus-6 yards in the second quarter to force an Elmhurst punt two plays later.
Cannonier has recorded 30 total tackles this season, including 16 solo stops. His team-high five interceptions is the most in the CCIW this season. Cannonier's five interceptions is tied for the 13th-highest total in Division III this year and the 17 interceptions by the Wheaton defense ranks fourth in Division III.
Wheaton is ranked fourth in this week's American Football Coaches Association
(AFCA) Division III Top-25 and is seventh in the current
D3football.com Top-25 Poll. The Thunder will face #22-Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Bloomington in a key CCIW matchup.
