Loras defeats Wheaton 2-1 in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Sectional Final

Dubuque, Iowa –
The Wheaton College men's soccer team had its season ended on Monday afternoon in the Sectional Semifinal round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament. Wheaton dropped a 2-1 decision in the first overtime at Loras College. Today's matchup was originally slated for Saturday afternoon, but a weekend snowstorm in Iowa forced postponement to Monday afternoon.

Loras, now 17-4-1 on the year, advances to the National Semifinal of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament on December 4 in Kansas City, Mo. Wheaton, the 2015 CCIW Champions, finish the season with a 15-4-3 record.
 
Wheaton controlled the pace of the match for much of the first half. The Thunder dominated possession of the ball and moved it around with solid and crisp play. Wheaton held a 5-4 edge in shot attempts in the first half as each team took one shot on goal. The Thunder held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks in the opening half.

Loras came out quickly to gain control of the match in the second half as the Duhawks held a shot advantage. Loras' Justin Giacotto had a tremendous scoring opportunity for the hosts in the 59th minute, but the opportunity failed. Wheaton's Elliot Borge countered in the 62nd minute with an open opportunity, but his shot was blocked to keep the score tied 0-0.

19204Loras' Johnny Rummelhart gave the Duhawks a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute when he scored off of an Alex Bradley assist. Rummelhart's goal came as the hosts had the key opportunity and he put the ball past Wheaton goalkeeper Matt Paprocki. Wheaton Andrew Wade blasted a shot in the 72nd minute in a terrific opportunity for the Thunder, but the shot went left of the net as the score stayed 1-0 in favor of Loras.

Thunder senior Marshall Hollingsworth (PICTURED LEFT) created a scoring opportunity for the Thunder in the 76th minute as he pushed the ball down the field. Hollingsworth distributed the ball to senior Stephen Golz who was in front of the net and tallied the game-tying goal from about 10 yards out to tie the match at 1-1. Loras' Mike Gordon had a scoring chance in the final minute of regulation, but was unable to put the ball into the net as the match went to overtime tied at 1-1.

The Duhawks had an outstanding scoring chance in the 98th minute thwarted when the shot was blocked by Wheaton's Ben Bakke. The ball went out of bounds off of Bakke and the Duhawks were awarded the corner kick. The hosts' corner kick found the foot of Giacotto who scored the game-winner in the 98th minute to advance the Duhawks.

Each team attempted 13 shots in the match and Loras had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The Duhawks had six corner kicks in the match and Wheaton had four. 

Thunder goalkeeper Matt Paprocki made three saves and allowed to goals in 98 minutes of work in the Thunder net. Loras netminder Jacob Peterson stopped two Wheaton shots and allowed one goal in his 98 minutes.

Note Worthy: The goal by Golz was the 48th of this career as he finishes his four-year career with 48 goals, the seventh-highest total in program history...Golz is tied for 10th in school history with 107 total points...Marshall Hollingsworth closes out his four-year career with 39 goals, which is tied for 13th in school history...Wheaton's senior class compiled a record of 72-16-8 in four seasons, with an impressive 79.2 winning percentage, four CCIW Championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances.
