Volleyball splits matches with St. Norbert and Edgewood

The Thunder volleyball team competed at the Edgewood College Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon. Wheaton opened the day with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-16) victory against St. Norbert College. Edgewood College defeated the Thunder, 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 25-15, 17-25, 15-7) in Wheaton's final match of the day.

Wheaton is now 11-17 on the year. The Thunder will conclude the regular season on Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. CCIW match against Millikin in King Arena.

Junior Shelby Knowles registered 13 kills, with 12 digs and two service aces in the 3-0 win against St. Norbert. Hannah Japp had 12 kills; Kelli Manning had a team-high 19 digs and Samantha Hedlund had 12 digs. Ashely Torok had a team-high 20 assists, with 14 digs. Kelly Thornton had 14 assists and two service aces. Emily Potts had a team-high three total blocks.

In the 3-2 loss to Edgewood, Knowles established a career-high with 30 kills. Japp added 10 kills in the win and Sara Reiskytl tallied eight kills. Torok had 26 assists and Thornton distributed 18 assists. Manning led all players with 29 digs as Hedlund had 17 digs and Knowles recorded 12 digs. Japp had a solo block with three assists blocks and Potts had four assisted blocks.

Coach Brittany Smith noted of her team's performance, "We've been working so hard and for us to get a solid win in against St Norbert, and then fight hard in a five-set match with Edgewood was validating for the team and their work. We are ready and excited to celebrate our seniors in our final home game of the season on Tuesday night and hope the Thunder nation joins us in King Arena as we look to take down the first-place team in our conference, Millikin."
