Thunder women's basketball rolls past Millikin 89-67

- The Wheaton women's basketball team bounced back from a disappointing performance on Wednesday with an 89-67 victory over Millikin University on Saturday night at King Arena. Wheaton led wire to wire and held a comfortable double-digit lead for the entire second half in improve ti 16-5 overall and 7-4 in conference play. Millikin drops to 9-12 and 3-7 in the CCIW.

Wheaton shot 43.8% (28-64) from the field and was 5-13 (38.5%) on three-point attempts. The Thunder were 28-36 (77.8%) from the free throw line. The Big Blue shot 48.1% (26-54) from the field and 2-7 (28.6%) from beyond the arc but Millikin was just 13-22 (59.1%) from the charity stripe. Wheaton won the battle on the boards 39-35 including an 18-12 edge in offensive rebounds.

After scoring the first five points of the game, Wheaton opened the game with a 15-6 edge over the first six minutes. The Thunder pushed the lead into double digits with a Maria Panaggio jumper seven minutes into the game. Wheaton would trail by as many as 20 in the final seconds of the half and took a 50-31 advantage into the halftime intermission.

Millikin cut the lead to as few as 14 points in the first seven minutes of the second half but would come no closer. Wheaton led by as many as 23 points at 84-61 with 2:24 to play following a Maris Hovee lay-in. NatalieRose Brogan provided Wheaton with the final edge with a long three-pointer in the final minute of the game to account for the 89-67 final total.

Wheaton used a 25-11 edge in points off turnovers and 15-7 advantage in second chance points to secure the victory.

Ellie Zeller led all scorers with 18 points and Katie McDaniels added 17 points and six assists. Chantal Meacham (PICTURED LEFT) connected on three of four three-point attempts for 11 points and Lauren Graham finished with 10 points. Yip Ypya led the Big Blue with 12 points.

Wheaton will continue its conference schedule with a 5 PM Wednesday night matchup at King Arena against the North Park University Vikings.
