Hanover Park, Ill. - The Wheaton men's tennis team opened its 2014 schedule on Friday afternoon hosting UW-Eau Claire (0-2) at Centre Court Athletic Club. The Thunder (1-0) swept through the doubled matches and picked up wins in five of the seven singles matches to earn a 7-2 victory against the Blugolds.
All-American
Ryan Kreis (PICTURED LEFT) earned a three-set win against Ryan Vande Linde at number-one singles. Kreis was a 6-3, 6-7, 10-3 win in the match. Kreis teamed with
Josh Ward to earn an 8-5 victory at number-doubles. Ward was a 6-1, 6-2 victor at number-four singles against Will Weyenberg.
A pair of Thunder freshmen picked up their first collegiate wins on Friday as
Justin Ancona and
Matt Steiner each earned singles wins and paired with each other for a 9-8 victory at number-two doubles. Ancona won a 6-1, 6-4 decision against Joe Meier of UWEC at number-two singles. Steiner picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win at number-three-singles against Kyle Hoffman.
David Buursma and
Derek Mumaw earned an 8-5 win for the Thunder at number-three doubles. Buursma lost a 1-6, 7-5, 10-5 contest against Conrad Felten at number-five singles. Josh Chuba of UWEC defeated Mumaw 6-4, 6-3 at number-six singles.
Wheaton will return to action next Saturday evening with a match against Luther College in Rock Island, Illinois.
