Men's basketball falls at North Central 71-66

The Wheaton men's basketball team had its seven-game win streak snapped on Saturday in a 71-66 loss at North Central (13-11/6-7 CCIW). Wheaton falls to 17-7 on the season and 10-3 in CCIW play.

The Thunder will return to action on Feb. 22 in the regular season finale in a 7 PM tipoff at home for "Senior Night" against CCIW leader Illinois Wesleyan. Next Saturday's contest between Wheaton and the Titans will play a key role in determining the 2013-14 CCIW Champion and the top-seed in the CCIW Tournament on Feb. 28-March 1. Wheaton scored the first 10 points of tonight's game at Gregory Arena in a span of just two-and-a-half minutes. The Thunder led 19-9 with 12:40 remaining in the first half. However, the Cardinals countered with a 23-6 scoring advantage to give the hosts a 32-25 lead with 4:35 remaining before halftime. Wheaton then scored the next six points in the game thanks to a traditional three-point conversion by Peter Smith and a trifecta from behind the three-point arc by Tad Fisher to cut the Cardinals lead to 32-31 with 3:05 remaining in the first half. The Cardinals led 36-33 when Fisher drained a three-pointer from the corner in the closing seconds of the half to send the teams into the locker room tied 36-36 at halftime.

Wheaton took an early 44-40 lead over the first six minutes of the second half. The two teams continued to battle through the tightly contested second half as a Tyler Peters layup with 11:38 left in the second half gave Wheaton a 51-49 lead to break a 49-49 tie. Peters' basket was the start of six straight points for the Thunder to give the guests a 55-49 lead with 9:10 remaining in regulation. Peters scored four of Wheaton's six points in the scoring run.

The Cardinals trimmed the Wheaton lead to 55-53 with 7:15 left in the second half when baskets by Nate Haynes (PICTURED LEFT) and Peters increased the 'Orange and Blue' lead to 59-52 with 6:25 left in regulation. The Cardinals rallied with a 10-0 run to take a 62-59 lead with 3:24 remaining in regulation. The Cardinals led 65-61 with 1:08 remaining in the second half when a pair of free throws by Peters cut the hosts' lead to 65-63.

Brayden Teuscher
A three-pointer by North Central's Vince Kmiec increased the NCC lead to 68-63 with 37-seconds left in regulation. The Kmiec trey helped key the Cardinals' 71-66 victory.

Peters led the Thunder with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field. Brayden Teuscher (PICTURED RIGHT) and Haynes each scored 13 points, as Haynes shot 6-of-8 from the floor, and Caleb DeMoss added nine points. Teuscher distributed four assists and Haynes grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

Brandon Williams led the Cardinals with 16 points and Jack Burchett scored 13 points for the hosts. Kmiec tallied 10 points. Burchett grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and Kmiec grabbed six boards.

Wheaton shot 43.1% (22-51) from the field, including 29.4% (5-17) from behind the three-point arc with a 70.8% (17-24) effort at the free throw line. North Central posted a 64.9% (24-37) field goal percentage, with 62.5% (5-8) from three-point range and 62.1% (18-29) at the charity stripe. The Cardinals out-rebounded the Thunder 32-23 on the evening.
