Chicago, Ill. - Playing its second game in a 24-hour span, the #9-ranked Thunder women's basketball team rode its depth to a 69-37 victory over the Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon. Twelve players played 10 or more minutes with no one playing more than 17 minutes as the Thunder coasted to 9-1 on the season. Wheaton is now off until a New Year's Eve matchup with Loras at 2 PM at King Arena. IIT falls to 0-8 on the season.
Wheaton struggled shooting, hitting just 34.1% (28-82) from the field and converting on only 14.3% (3-21) of its three-point attempts while shooting 10-15 (66.7%) from the free throw line. The Scarlet Hawks were 23.1% (12-52) from the field inlcuding 22.2% (4-18) on three-point attempts and 52.9% (9-17) from the free throw line. Wheaton outrebounded IIT 67-32 including a 34-9 edge on the offensive glass. Over half (35) of Wheaton's points were tallied as second chance points.
A tight contest through eight minutes opened up as Wheaton used a 16-0 run over a seven minute span to open up an 18-point lead and push out to a 34-11 halftime edge. The Thunder opened the second half on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 30 points, which would be as close as the Scarlet Hawks would get for the remainder of the contest. The Thunder pushed the lead to as high as 38 points in the second half before coasting down the stretch to a 69-37 victory.
Hannah Considine led the Thunder with 12 points and was joined in double figures by
Lauren Graham with 10 points.
Katie McDaniels scored nine points to go with five rebounds and three steals.
NatalieRose Brogan scored seven points and
Moriah Reeves and
Leah Perera each scored six points.
Jennifer Berg grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Thunder. Kaylee Wicka led IIT with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Wheaton will next be in action on December 31 when the Thunder host Loras College at 2 PM in King Arena.
