#14-Wheaton women's basketball comes back for 69-61 victory at Elmhurst

The Wheaton women's basketball team needed a second half comeback to earn its 11th consecutive victory on Wednesday night. Wheaton erased a double-digit deficit with a 10-0 run and then broke a late tie by closing the game on an 8-0 run to earn a 69-61 victory at Elmhurst's R.A. Faganel Hall. Wheaton, ranked 14th in the latest D3Hoops.com poll, improved to 12-1 and 2-0 in conference play. Elmhurst fell to 8-5 and 0-2 in the CCIW.

Trailing 43-32 with 15:00 minutes to play, the Thunder ran off 10 unanswered points including a pair of three-pointers by Chantal Meacham to cut the Elmhurst lead to 43-42 with 10:35 to play. Three-pointers by Katie McDaniels and Moriah Reeves (PICTURED RIGHT) tied the game on a separate occasions before an Ellie Zeller lay-up gave Wheaton its first lead of the second half at 54-52 the 7:17 mark. Elmhurst tied the game three times down the stretch including at 61-61 with 2:05 to play, but the Thunder ended the game with eight unanswered points to claim the 69-61 victory.

Wheaton shot 41% (25-61) from the field, 6-11 (54.5%) from the three-point line and 13-20 (65%) from the free throw line. Elmhurst was 24-60 (40%) from the field, 3-11 (31.6%) from beyond the arc and 7-9 (77.8%) from the charity stripe.

The Bluejays jumped out to a quick 10-point lead at 14-4 and 16-6 but an 11-0 run by the Thunder gave Wheaton its first lead of the game at 17-16 with nine minutes left in the first half. Elmhurst's 7-0 run was answered by seven straight points for the Thunder but the Bluejays ended the half with a 7-2 run to take a 31-26 halftime lead.

Ellie Zeller led the Thunder with 17 points. Katie McDaniels scored 14 points to go with nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. Maris Hovee recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Fiona McMahon led all scorers with 22 points for the Bluejays and also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Wheaton will aim for its 12th consecutive victory on Saturday when the Thunder host Augustana College at 5 PM at King Arena.
