Thunder volleyball splits a pair at season-opening UW-Whitewater Invitational

GAME STATS 1 | GAME STATS 2 Whitewater, Wis. – The 2013 Wheaton College volleyball team opened its season on Friday with a 1-1 record in the opening day at the UW-Whitewater Invitational. The Thunder will play in two matches on Saturday in the final day of action at the tournament.

Wheaton lost to Lawrence University, 3-1 (BOXSCORE)  in the opening match of the night. Wheaton earned a 25-19 in the first set. The Vikings countered with a 25-16 win in the second set and earned a 25-15 victory in the third set. Lawrence secured the win with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set.

Freshman Shelby Knowles led Wheaton with a team-high 11 kills and she added 15 digs. Maddie McGinnis contributed 10 kills and Lindsay Stein tallied nine kills. Freshman Ashley Torok distributed 29 assists and Kelli Manning had 13 digs. Stein led the Thunder with four assisted blocks.
 
Wheaton topped UW-Oshkosh 3-0 (BOXSCORE) in the second match of the night. The Thunder came out and earned a 25-23 victory in the opening set and followed that up with a 26-24 win in the second set. Wheaton locked up the victory with a 25-19 win in the decisive third set.

Maddie McGinnis led the Thunder with 14 kills, recording a sparkling .632 attack percentage. Emily Buyse tallied eight kills and Shelby Knowles added seven.  Jess Foggy recorded six kills and Andy DeMoss had five. Sophomore setter Lauren Wilhite contributed 21 assists with two service aces and freshman Ashley Torok had 20 assists. Lindsay Stein and DeMoss each had six assisted blocks in the win. Kelli Manning recorded a team-high 11 digs.
