GAME STATS Wheaton, Ill.- The Wheaton women's basketball had their school record 18-game home win streak snapped on Saturday in a 47-44 loss to Carthage. The loss is Wheaton's first in King Arena since February 12, 2011. With the win Carthage (20-4, 12-1) clinches the CCIW Championship and will host the CCIW Tournament next weekend. Wheaton (20-4, 10-3) will play Illinois Wesleyan in the 2/3 seed game on Friday, February 22 at 5 PM.
Wheaton shot 16-53 (34.6%) from the field and 4-14 (28.6%) from the three-point line while shooting 8-10 from the free throw stripe. Carthage was 17-51 (33.3%) from the field, 4-14 from the three-point line and 9-12 from the free throw line.
The first half was a back and forth defensive affair with neither team able to open up breathing room. Carthage held the biggest lead of the half with a four-point advantage with 4:55 remaining in the half. Wheaton would score the next six points on back-to back three-pointers by
Jenn Lee and
Breanna Bohlen. However, Carthage would hold a 22-21 lead at intermission.
The game remained close until consecutive three-pointers by Carthage's Haley Stercic turned a two-point Wheaton lead into a four-point hole. The Lady Reds would extend the lead to 44-37 with 3:31 remaining, but Wheaton would cut the lead to 44-42 on a free throw by
Brooke Olson with 27 seconds remaining and Wheaton would get no closer. Carthage iced the game from the free throw line and captured the CCIW with a 47-44 victory.
Brooke Olson led the Thunder with 15 points and
Lauren Graham chipped in eight points.
Maris Hovee (PICTURED RIGHT) had 10 rebounds, six points and five blocks. Cailee Corcoran led all scorers with 16 points for the Lady Reds.
Wheaton will finish the regular season on Tuesday night when they host Elmhurst College at 7:30 PM at King Arena.
