Grand Rapids, Mich.- A hot start by the Knights of Calvin College was too much for the Thunder men's basketball team to overcome on Saturday afternoon as the Thunder dropped fell to Calvin in the second day of the MIAA/CCIW Classic 78-51. Calvin made its first 11 shots from the field and put the Thunder in an early double-digit hole that they would not be recover from. The fast start and early foul trouble in the Wheaton backcourt led to a 45-21 halftime deficit.
Wheaton shot 17-for-59 (28.8%) from the field and 5-of-25 (20%) from beyond the arc on Saturday. Wheaton was 12-of-14 (85.7%) from the free throw line. Calvin, shot an impressive 30-of-55 (54.5%) from the field and was 4-for-14 (28.6%) from three-point range. The Knights were 14-for-18 from the free throw line.
The Knights raced out to an early 6-0 lead, but a
Nate Haynes layup was able to cut the lead down to 10-7. A three-pointer on Wheaton's next possession cut the lead down to two at 12-10 but that was the closest that Wheaton would get for the remainder of the game. A quick 10-2 run for the hosts pushed the lead into double digits and the Knights continued to expand the lead to 15 with seven minutes remaining. A 9-0 run in the final minutes of the half pushed the lead above 20 points and the Knights headed to the locker room ahead 45-21.
Wheaton was not able to get the lead below 20 points in the second half and the Knights earned the 78-51 victory.
Tyler Peters scored 21 points to lead all scorers. With his 21 points, Peters crossed the 1100 point threshold and passed AJ Westergren to move into 35th on the all-time career scoring list.
Brayden Teuscher (PICTURED RIGHT) added 15 points for the Thunder. Jordan Daley and Tyler Kruis led a balanced Knights scoring attack with 17 points apiece. Jordan Brink added 16 points.
Wheaton will be off until it hosts Alma College on December 14 at 7:30 PM.
