Elmhurst, Ill. – The Wheaton volleyball team lost to top-seeded Elmhurst College 3-0 on Friday night in the semifinals of the 2013 CCIW Volleyball Tournament. The Bluejays defeated Wheaton 25-22 in the first set and the hosts topped the Thunder 25-23 in the second set. Elmhurst closed out the win with a 25-17 victory in the third set.
Wheaton is now 24-12 on the year. The 24 victories compiled by the Thunder this season is the most for the program since a 25-9 campaign in 2007.
Elmhurst (34-4) advances to the CCIW Tournament Championship match on Saturday afternoon against Millikin. Millikin defeated Carthage 3-2 (25-19, 25-27, 21-25, 25-23) in the first semifinal of the evening at Elmhurst's R.A. Faganel Hall.
Maddie McGinnis lead Wheaton with 10 kills in tonight's loss against Elmhurst and she added seven digs.
Shelby Knowles tallied eight kills, with a team-high 11 digs.
Andy DeMoss recorded seven kills and
Lindsay Stein tallied six kills.
Ashley Torok recorded 20 assists and
Lauren Wilhite added 12.
Kelli Manning recorded 10 digs.
Wheaton recorded 35 kills in the match, with a .173 attack percentage. The Thunder had 34 assists and 39 digs. Elmhurst collected 47 kills, with a .312 attack percentage. The Bluejays recorded 44 assists, with 44 digs.
In the first set, the set was tied 6-6 when the Bluejays took the lead for good with 7-2 spurt that gave the hosts a 13-8 lead and Elmhurst went on to the 25-19 victory. McGinnis had five kills in the set and Manning had a team-high six digs.
Elmhurst won the second set 25-14. The Bluejays led 7-6 when they put together a 9-2 run to take a 16-8 lead to pull away. The third set was tied 20-20 and went on to a 22-22 tie. Stein tallied four kills in the set and Torok had seven assists.
Elmhurst scored the final three points to close out the match by winning set three 25-22. Knowles tallied five kills in the set and McGinnis recorded four. Torok had eight assists in the set and Knowles recorded four digs.
