Wheaton volleyball clinches CCIW Tournament bid; splits pair of matches

The Wheaton Thunder volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday against Augustana College and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Wheaton earned a 3-1 victory over Augustana before falling in straight sets to UW-Whitewater. With the victory against Augustana, Wheaton clinched a berth in the upcoming CCIW Tournament. Wheaton is now 24-10 overall and 4-2 in CCIW play. Wheaton will determine its seed and opponent for the CCIW Tournament when the Thunder travels to Carthage on Tuesday night for the final match of the regular season.

In the opening match against Augustana the Thunder won the opening set 25-18 before dropping the second set 18-25. The Thunder then rebounded to win the next two sets 25-18 and 25-20. Shelby Knowles led the Thunder attack with 16 kills and Lindsay Stein (PICTURED RIGHT) added 10 kills and seven assisted blocks. Ashley Torok doled out 32 assists and Kelli Manning had 23 digs to go with Knowles' 19 digs.

UW-Whitewater took down the Thunder in straight sets in Wheaton's second match by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-19. Maddie McGinnis was Wheaton's leading attacker with 12 kills followed by Knowles' eight and seven kills by Emily Buyse. Torok assisted on 40 more Wheaton points and Knowles tallied 13 digs.

Wheaton will travel to Carthage on Tuesday night, November 5, at 7 PM for its final match of the regular season. Wheaton and Carthage are tied for the third spot in the conference standings with identical 4-2 CCIW records. Both teams are guaranteed a berth in the CCIW Tournament next weekend. Their opponents will be also be decided by the outcome of Tuesday night's Elmhurst/Millikin match. The Bluejays and Big Blue are tied atop the conference at 6-0.

Note worthy: Prior to Wheaton's match against Augustana the Thunder honored Emily Buyse, Cora Nott, Meghan Grant, Megan Thornton and Jess Foggy as part of their Senior Day festivities.
