Thunder football team shuts out North Park 58-0

GAME STATS Chicago, Ill. – The Wheaton College football team concluded the regular season on Saturday with a 58-0 shutout of North Park University (3-7/3-4 CCIW). Wheaton is now 8-2 on the year and closes conference play with a 5-2 CCIW record.

Wheaton racked up 495 yards of offense on Saturday with 248 passing yards and 247 rushing yards. The Thunder defense held North Park to just 135 yards of total offense, with 117 passing yards and only 18 rushing yards.

Senior quarterback Jordan Roberts was nearly flawless passing, as he completed 14 of his 15 passing attempts for 183 yards. Four of his 14 completions were touchdowns. David Washko caught four passes for 74 yards, including two touchdown receptions. Adam Bruere had three receptions for 64 yards, with one touchdown grab. David Sjelin also had a touchdown catch. Jesse Geary led Wheaton's rushing game with 54 yards on nine carries and Jacob Furnari ran the ball five times for 52 yards. Senior Justin Swider carried the ball 14 times for 45 yards, with one touchdown run.

Senior linebacker Jordan Higgins (PICTURED RIGHT) led the Thunder defense with seven total tackles, including one tackle for loss (-3 yards).  Alex Mendez had an interception for the Thunder and defensive lineman Bobby Pugsley tallied two quarterback sacks.

Wheaton scored 27 points in a first quarter that included 16 and 29-yard touchdown passes from Roberts to Washko (PICTURED LEFT). The Thunder special teams blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown and Roberts threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Thorsen in the opening quarter.

Wheaton led 41-0 at halftime as Stephen Seitz scored on a one-yard touchdown run and Justin Swider reached the end zone on a four-yard TD scamper. Sjelin caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from Roberts in the third quarter and Sam Cote converted a 46-yard field goal as Wheaton led the Vikings 51-0 through three quarters of play. Reece Butler threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Bruere in the fourth quarter to account for the 58-0 final score.


Note Worthy: Jordan Roberts passed the 6,000 career passing yardage milestone and is the sixth quarterback in school history to do so...Roberts passed Tim Hardy to finish in fifth place on the all-time passing yards list with 6,128 yards...Roberts finishes second all-time in total offense with 7,387 total yards...today marked the third time this season that the Thunder has shut out an opponent, joining a 66-0 win against Albion College and a 28-0 victory at Carthage; this is the first time that Wheaton has posted three shutouts in a season since 1996 when the squad had four shutouts (Aurora, Elmhurst, Millikin and North Park)...Wheaton owns a 40-5 advantage in the all-time series with North Park...Wheaton has not lost to North Park since 1979.
