Thunder volleyball team sweeps at North Central's "Tiffany Robinson Memorial Tournament"

The Thunder volleyball team concluded its participation in North Central College's "Tiffany Robinson Memorial Tournament" on Saturday with two wins to 4-0 for the tournament. Wheaton defeated St. Mary's (Minn.) 3-2 in the morning and the Thunder earned a 3-0 victory against UW-Oshkosh in the afternoon session. Thunder junior Maddie McGinnis and sophomore Kelli Manning were each selected to the all-tournament team.

Thunder head coach Brittany Smith noted of her team's performance, "I am incredibly proud of the team. They kept their composure, while facing two great opponents today. It was great to see." Wheaton is now 19-6 on the season and will return to conference action on Tuesday when the squad hosts a key CCIW match against sixth-ranked Elmhurst at 7 PM in King Arena.

In Saturday morning's 3-2 Wheaton win against St. Mary's the Thunder jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a 25-23 win in set one and a 25-13 victory in the second set. Wheaton had 20 kills in the first set, with a .349 attack percentage and six kills apiece by Andy DeMoss (PICTURED LEFT) and Maddie McGinnis. Wheaton tallied 15 kills in the second set with a .355 attack percentage. St. Mary's rallied to win the third set 25-14 and also won the fourth set 25-21 to tie the match at two sets apiece. Wheaton had six kills in the third set with a -.067 attack percentage and the Thunder tallied 11 kills in the fourth set with a .147 attack percentage. Wheaton rebounded to win the decisive fifth set 15-10 as the Thunder recoded eight kills in the set with a .217 attack percentage.

McGinnis led Wheaton with 19 kills in the match against St. Mary's, posting a .378 attack percentage. DeMoss recorded 13 kills, with five total blocks. Lindsay Stein made 11 kills, with eight total blocks, including five solos. Shelby Knowles (PICTURED RIGHT) made 11 kills, with 15 digs. Freshman setter Ashley Torok distributed 47 assists in the match and Kelli Manning led the Thunder with 23 digs. Wheaton totaled 60 kills in the match, with a .211 attack percentage and 52 assists. The Thunder recorded four service aces, with 74 digs and 14 total team blocks. St. Mary's had 56 kills in the match, with a .204 attack percentage and 50 assists. St. Mary's recorded 67 digs, with 10 total team blocks.

Wheaton picked up its fourth win of the tournament with a 3-0 victory against UW-Oshkosh, winning a 25-22, 25-18, 25-23 victory against the Titans. Wheaton totaled 19 kills in the first set, with a .295 attack percentage. Wheaton recorded 16 kills, with a .317 attack percentage in the second set as McGinnis and DeMoss each had five kills. Wheaton closed out the win in the third set with 13 kills and a .154 attack percentage, with McGinnis leading the Thunder with seven kills.

McGinnis led the Thunder with 17 kills and a .361 attack percentage in the match. She also added 12 kills and four service aces. DeMoss and Shelby Knowles each tallied eight kills and Stein added seven kills. Ashley Torok distributed 28 assists and Manning recorded 23 digs.
