Volleyball team wraps up action at the Wheaton Invitational

The Thunder volleyball team hosted its Wheaton Invitational this weekend in King Arena. Wheaton went 1-1 on Saturday to conclude the weekend with a 1-3 record.

The Thunder got off to a slow start on Saturday morning, dropping the first two sets to the University of Dubuque 25-20 and 23-25.  However, Wheaton came storming back with a dominant 25-12 victory in the third set and held a commanding 20-12 lead in the fourth set before the Spartans ran off seven straight points to make it 20-19.  The Thunder would holf off Dubuque to win the fourth set 25-23.  Wheaton jumped out to an early lead again in the decisive fifth set, but Dubuque broke a 10-10 tie and won the fifth set 15-11 and take the match 3-2.  #Emily Buyse was a force at the net registering 16 kills and two blocks to lead the Thunder in both categories.  Freshman Lauren Wilhite dished out a career high 42 assists.  Megan McKinley paced the Thunder at the line with two service aces while Cora Nott led the defense with 33 digs.

Wheaton ended their weekend on a high note with a 3-1 victory over Lebanon Valley.  Wheaton quickly rebounded from the loss to take the first set 25-17 but the Flying Dutchmen would take the second set 25-18.  Wheaton then controlled play to win the final two sets 25-21 and 25-18.  Andy DeMoss (PICTURED RIGHT) was the offensive leader with 18 kills while Buyse tallied 11 of her own.  Wilhite starred again, surpassing her previous mark with 49 assists.  Buyse pounded all three service aces the Thunder recorded in the match.  Megan Thornton anchored the defense with 28 digs.  Nott had 12 digs and Cassie Murphy finished with 10 digs to accompany eight kills. Madeline Taylor finished with three blocks to lead the Thunder.

Cornell College (Iowa) won the tournament, finishing 4-0.  Emily Buyse was named to the All-Tournament team for the Thunder.

Loras defeated the Thunder 3-1 in the opening session on Friday. Loras topped the Thunder 25-23 in the first set and Wheaton responded with a 25-17 victory in the second set. The Duhawks picked up 25-17, 25-17 victories in the next two sets to close out the hosts. Buyse tallied nine kills and made four assisted blocks in the match. Senior Cassie Murphy had eight kills, with 11 digs and nine assists. Madeline Taylor and Hannah Velling each registered seven kills and Lindsay Stein recorded six kills, with four assisted blocks. Freshman Lauren Wilhite distributed 29 assists, with 16 digs and five assisted blocks. Cora Nott led the Thunder with 18 digs and Megan Thornton added 15 digs.

Cornell College (Iowa) topped the Thunder 3-0 in Friday's second session as the Rams bested Wheaton 25-21, 25-16, 25-14). Murphy had a team-high seven kills, with 11 assists. Buyse tallied six kills, while Wilhite registered eight assists with seven digs. Megan McKinley led the Thunder with 12 digs and Thornton added 11.
