Fort Myers, Fla. – A cavalcade of hits and solid pitching gave the Wheaton College baseball team a doubleheader sweep over Fredonia State University on Thursday. The Thunder won the first game 17-0 and the second game 10-2 to improve to 4-3 on the season.
Wheaton's bats struck early once again in game one and scored in all six of its innings.
Trey Martin got the ball rolling by cracking a three-run homer to left field in the first inning. Phillip Tuttle tallied the next three runs, hitting an RBI single in the second and a two-run single in the third.
Overall, the Thunder tallied 15 hits, including four homers and three doubles.
Drew Golz powered a two-run shot over the fence in the fourth inning. In the six-run fifth inning,
Ryan Miller knocked in two on his homer to dead center field and
Desmond Cato (PICTURED RIGHT) launched a three-run blast about 440 feet to right center.
Justin Zeller closed the scoring in the sixth with a double that scored two runs to account for the final 17-0 score.
In addition to his hitting prowess, Golz (2-0) was dominant on the mound with an array of pitches that the Blue Devils could not get a bead on. The senior lefty hurled a two-hit shutout over seven innings and tallied eight strikeouts with two walks.
Miller led the offense by going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Tuttle was 2-for-3 with three RBI, with Cato hitting 1-for-2 with three RBI and two walks. Martin batted 2-for-5 with four RBI and Golz similarly hit 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Game two continued the onslaught in the top of the first. The Thunder loaded the bases and drew three RBI walks. Three more runs went on the board thanks to run-scoring hits from Martin,
Austin Driggers (PICTURED LEFT) and
Justin Swider. The lead grew to 9-0 in the fifth thanks to Martin's two-run single through the left side and Driggers followed with an RBI single through the right side.
In his second career start, freshman
Casey Moll (1-1) put up a strong six innings of work. The righty only allowed one hit in the first four innings before a walk and two hits by Fredonia tallied two runs in the fifth. Moll got the win, with three hits allowed, four walks and five strikeouts.
Alex German closed the game with an inning of scoreless relief.
Catcher
Taylor Howe also threw out two runners attempting to steal second base in the game.
Wheaton's top five hitters in the lineup produced all game as each player had at least two hits. Three hits each came from Golz, Zeller and Martin (four RBI). Miller and Driggers (three RBI) totaled two hits each. Cato displayed patience at the plate and drew three walks.
Wheaton will next take on Ohio Northern University at 9 AM (ET) on Friday.
