Elgin, Ill. - A seven-RBI day by
Trey Martin helped the Wheaton College baseball team break Judson University's 12-game win streak with a 9-7 victory on Thursday.
The Thunder improve to 7-4 on the year while the Eagles fall to 14-5.
As usual, Wheaton scored the game's first run for the eighth time in 11 games this year.
John Jensen-Johnson led off the third by reaching on an error and scored when Martin stroked a two-out double to left field.
Judson tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth and both sides tallied three runs each in the fifth inning to make it 4-4. Martin was again the source of scoring thanks to a three-run homer to center that plated
Ryan Miller and
Drew Golz (PICTURED RIGHT).
In the continuing see-saw battle of momentum, Wheaton went ahead again in the seventh on a lead-off homer by Golz. However, the Eagles scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead.
The Thunder rallied back in the eighth. Singles by
Alex MaLossi, Johnson and Miller loaded the bases.
Justin Zeller drew a full-count walk to score a run before Martin cleared the bags with a triple.
Golz (3-0) finished off the game on the mound with a pair of scoreless innings to keep his perfect record intact. The senior lefty gave up nine hits and seven runs in his complete-game effort. He also walked two and struck out four.
Judson's Craig Lipp (2-1) took the loss in relief, allowing five runs on six hits in three innings.
Martin's seven-RBI performance gives him a team-best 28 RBI through 11 games. He finished 3-for-5 at the dish. Golz and Miller were both 2-for-4, while Zeller drew three walks in his five at-bats. Zeller now leads the team with 14 walks.
Wheaton ended up with 11 hits, which makes it the eighth contest this year that the Thunder have had at least 10 hits.
Wheaton will resume action at 1 PM Saturday versus Dominican University at Alexian Field in Schaumburg.
