2012 Wheaton football team awards handed out at annual banquet

Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton College Football team held its annual postseason banquet on December 16. The program honored the members of the 2012 CCIW Champion Thunder football team, along with several individual honors.

Mark Hiben
Sophomore wide receiver Mark Hiben (PICTURED LEFT) was named Team MVP at the event. Hiben earned the Fred Lange Memorial Award for "Most Valuable Player". Hiben had a team-high 961 receiving yards, on 64 receptions, with 11 touchdowns this year. He averaged 15 yards per catch and 120.1 receiving yards per game, earning Second Team All-American honors from D3football.com.

Pat Dansdill
Senior linebacker Pat Dansdill (PICTURED RIGHT) was honored with the James Parmalee Memorial Award for "Most Respected Player". A Second Team All-North Region selection this year from D3football.com, Dansdill Dansdill was second on the Thunder defense this season with 67 total tackles, including 43 solo stops and nine tackles for loss (-27 yards).

Senior safety Garrett Cook  received the John Henry Toughness Award. As a starting safety, Cook led the Thunder in tackles this season, with 72 tackles, including 55 solo stops. He made two interceptions, with five pass break-ups, earning First Team All-North Region honors from D3football.com.

Kicker/punter Sam Cote earned the High Ground Award for special teams. Cote converted eight of 13 field goal attempts this season, with 50 PAT's on 52 attempts. As a punter this season, Cote kicked 20 punts for 841 yards, averaging 42 yards per punt, including eight inside the 20-yard line.

The JR Bishop "Scholar Athlete Award" went to senior Sam VanHeest. VanHeest made 32 totackles this season, including three for tackles for lost yardage.

The 12th Man Award for “Scout Team Player of the Year” on defense went to linebacker Mike Swider and the award on offense was awarded to quarterback Keegan Kemp.

The team captains for the 2013 season were also announced – linebacker Brett Anderson, defensive lineman Sam Weatherred, quarterback Jordan Roberts and offensive lineman Nolan Randall.

Also honored at the banquet were the team's All-CCIW selections: Jordan Roberts; Mark Hiben; Morgan Cook; Spencer Clark; Brandon Dykstra; Pat Dansdill; Garrett Cook; Justin Swider; Sam Cote; Jesse Peterson; Brett Anderson; Sam VanHeest and Matt McReynolds.

The All-North Region honorees from Wheaton were honored: Mark Hiben; Brandon Dykstra; Garrett Cook; Jordan Roberts; Pat Dansdill; and Justin Swider.

Mark Hiben and Brandon Dykstra were recogized at the banquet for their selection to the D3football.com All-American Team.
