Men's basketball wins the Lee Pfund Classic with a 76-49 win against Alma

Wheaton, Ill. –
The Wheaton men's basketball improved to 2-0 on the season with a 76-49 victory against Alma College (0-2) in Wheaton's Lee Pfund Classic. Wheaton wins the tournament title with a 2-0 record. The Thunder will host Loras College on Tuesday at 7:30 PM.

The Thunder led the Scots 9-6 with 14:00 remaining in the first half when a Nathan Haynes layup sparked a 16-4 run for the hosts to increase Wheaton's lead to 25-10 with four minutes left in the opening half. Thanks in large part to its stingy defense, Wheaton held a 33-12 lead at halftime.

The Scots never came closer than a 22-point deficit in the second half. Wheaton's largest lead of the game was a 35-point bulge late in the second half.

Thunder junior Tyler Peters led the Thunder with 18 points, six steals and three assists. Peters' strong effort on both offense and defense earned him the Will Landry MVP award for the tournament. Nathan Haynes (PICTURED LEFT) registered a “double-double” with 14 rebounds and 13 points as he shot 6-for-7 from the field. Haynes earned All-Tournament recognition for his efforts in Wheaton's two wins. Wheaton sophomore Brayden Teuscher (PICTURED RIGHT) scored 17 points, with three assists to help the Thunder effort. Sophomore Peter Smith scored 13 points, with five rebounds.

Wheaton shot 44.6% (29-65) from the field, with 30% (3-10) from three-point range and 83.3% (15-18) at the free throw line. Alma posted a 36.3% (17-47) field goal percentage, with 33.3% (4-12) from behind the three-point arc and 91.7% (11-12) at the charity stripe. Alma held a 34-33 advantage in rebounding, with the Thunder holding a 10-7 edge on the offensive glass.

Charley Helmer led the Scots with 12 points off of the Alma bench. Greg Silverthorn added seven points and All-Tournament selection Isiah Law grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
