Elmhurst, Ill- The Wheaton volleyball team's recent run of five consecutives victories came to an abrupt end over the weekend at the Elmhurst Invitational. Wheaton dropped four matches, three to nationally ranked opponents, in ending the weekend 0-4.
Wheaton opened the weekend with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of #20 Wisconsin- Stevens Point. Wheaton won the first two games 25-19, 25-21 but dropped the last three 25-18, 25-15 and 15-10.
Andy DeMoss led the team with 16 kills.
Lauren Wilhite passed out 44 assists and
Kelli Manning led the team with 27 digs.
In their second game, Wheaton fell to #9-ranked University of Chicago 3-1 (14-25, 21-25, 25-16, 22-25). DeMoss and
Emily Buyse each recorded a pair of blocks in the match.
Megan Thornton had two service aces and DeMoss again led the offense with 14 kills while Wilhite had 29 assists.
To open play on Saturday, the Thunder fell to Transylvania University 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 15-25, 17-25). DeMoss registered 16 kills and two blocks while Wilhite assisted on 32 points.
Wheaton closed play with a 3-0 (19-25, 23-25, 17-25) loss to #13-Wartburg College. Wilhite had 23 assists in the match.
Wheaton will close out conference play on Tuesday night at Augustana.
