Wheaton, Ill.- Coming off a tournament championship performance at the Tiffany Robinson Memorial Tournament, the Thunder volleyball team continued its recent winning streak with a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-21) victory over North Park on Tuesday night at King Arena. In doing so, Wheaton sent seniors
Cassie Murphy and
Hannah Velling out with a victory in the final home match of their career.
Wheaton (10-16, 1-5) raced to a quick start in set one as they took 13-5 lead halfway through the match. North Park subsequently put a run together to narrow the gap to 20-18, but the Thunder rebounded to close out the set and capture a 25-18 set victory.
The second set started with Wheaton on a 5-0 run which ballooned to 15-9 at the midway point of the set. North Park (6-14, 0-6) would battle back throught the second half of the set and finally passed the Thunder and take set two 25-23.
North Park carried the momentum into a 9-4 lead early in the third set but in typical fashion the set would not go without a comeback. The Thunder battled back and caught the Vikings at 13 and continued to take a 18-13 lead. Wheaton would go on to take the set 25-15.
The fourth set featured a back-and-forth start with Wheaton finally establishing a lead at 8-6. Wheaton would pull away from there to lead 20-10 and survived a late rally to earn a 25-21 win.
Sophomore
Andy DeMoss led the Thunder with 15 kills, while senior
Cassie Murphy and junior
Emily Buyse each added 10 kills. Senior
Hannah Velling had eight kills and
Lauren Wilhite added seven, with Wilhite recording a team-best 43 assists. Freshman libero
Kelli Manning led the Thunder with 25 digs and Murphy added 18, while
Cora Nott had 11. Buyse recorded a team-high five total blocks, while Velling, Wilhite and Murphy each added two total blocks.
