Thunder volleyball squad finishes weekend 4-0

The Wheaton volleyball team went 4-0 this weekend at the Tiffany Robinson Memorial Tournament hosted by North Central College.  The Thunder took the tournament championship by being the only undefeated team in the field.

The Thunder got off to a quick start with a straight sets victory over Aurora on Friday afternoon by scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-10.  Andy DeMoss led the Thunder attack in game one with 13 kills while freshman Lauren Wilhite directed the offense with 32 assists.  Emily Buyse and Megan Thornton each set season highs with five service aces.  Buyse also tallied two blocks.  Kelli Manning led with 14 digs.

In their second match, the Thunder knocked off UW-Platteville three games to one.  Wheaton won game one 25-23 before dropping game two 21-25.  The Thunder then won the last two games 25-21 and 25-22.  DeMoss again led the Thunder with 17 more kills while Wilhite doled out another 48 assists. Manning registered 31 more digs and a pair of service aces while Buyse recorded a season high seven blocks.

In their first game on Saturday, Wheaton jumped out to quick lead and never looked back, winning a straight sets victory over Rockford by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-17.  Buyse recorded 13 kills to pace the offense while Wilhite was one again the catalyst with 42 assists.  Manning was credited with 24 digs.

The Thunder finished their weekend with a hard fought five set victory over the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.  Wheaton dominated game one 25-12 and won game two in overtime 26-24 but dropped games three and four 26-28 and 19-25.  Wheaton then won the decisive fifth game 15-11.  DeMoss nailed 17 kills and Wilhite set a career high with 46 assists.  Buyse had three service aces and six blocks while Manning also had three aces and 34 digs.
