Whitewater, Wis. - The Wheaton volleyball team opened its 2011 season this weekend at the UW-Whitewater Invitational. The Thunder posted a 2-2 record for the weekend to open the season.
Wheaton lost to #24-ranked UW-Whitewater in its first match with the Warhawks defeating the Thunder 3-1 (25-23, 25-14, 22-25, 25-22). Alma College topped Wheaton later on Friday, 3-2 (25-14, 19-25, 25-16, 23-25, 16-14). On Saturday the Thunder topped Lakeland, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-17) and defeated St. Norbert, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-16)
In the match against UW-Whitewater, senior setter
Jenna McCallister (PICTURED) distributed 33 assists and added 16 digs. Freshman
Megan McKinley recorded a team-high 11 kills, with 15 digs.
Cassie Murphy recorded nine kills, with 11 assists and three assists. Sophomore
Emily Buyse tallied nine kills and
Kaitlyn Graham Novosad recorded 15 digs.
Against Alma, McKinley tallied 14 kills, with 11 digs and two blocks. Buyse recorded 10 kils with two blocks. McCallister distributed 32 assists, Graham Novosad had a team-high 24 digs and Murphy had three blocks.
Murphy and McKinley each led the Thunder with eight kills in the victory against Lakeland on Saturday. McCallister had 21 assists in the win.
Murphy led Wheaton with 11 kills in the victory against St. Nobert. McCallister recorded nine kills and had 29 assists in the victory and Buyse was in on four blocks
