Naperville, Ill. - The Wheaton men's basketball team lost 73-58 to Augustana College on Friday night in the semifinals of the 2011 CCIW Men's Basketball Tournament. Wheaton is 18-8 on the season, while Augustana is 23-3 and advances to the CCIW Tournament Final on Saturday at 7:30 PM.
The two teams played a closely contested first half. The Vikings led 27-17 with 4:33 remaining before halftime. Three-pointers by
Andrew Jahns and
Jeremy Pflederer in the final 1:20 of the first half helped Wheaton trim the Augustana lead to 33-31 at the halftime intermission.
Augustana held a 39-37 lead with 13:50 remaining in the second half when the Vikings put together 12-unanswered points to extend their lead to 51-37 with 9:00 left in regulation. Augustana maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of regulation.
Senior
Andrew Jahns led the Thunder with 17 points and two assists.
Tim McCrary scored 13 points, with seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Sophomore
Nate Serenius scored eight points, with four rebounds.
Spencer Schultze and
Jon DeMoss each scored six points, as Schultze added six rebounds.
Kyle Nelson led Augustana with 14 points and nine rebounds. Chris Anderson scored 11 points off of the Viking bench and Drew Croegaert added nine points.
Wheaton shot a 32.1% (17-53) field goal percentage, with 17,6% (3-17) from three-point range and 77.8% (21-27) at the free throw line. Augustana shot 50% (26-52) from the floor, with 33.3% (3-9) from behind the three-point arc and 54.5% (18-33) at the charity stripe. The Vikings out-rebounded Wheaton 45-28, with a 16-10 edge on the offensive glass.
