Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton College women's basketball team jumped out to a big lead and made another offensive surge late in the second half to defeat Clarke University 57-43 on Monday.
The Thunder improve its record to 4-3 while the Crusaders fell to 0-9.
Wheaton broke out to a 26-9 lead in the early going. But Clarke took over the last seven minutes of the half to cut the deficit to 31-22. The hosts continued to rally in the second half, taking a 38-37 lead with nine minutes left as Wheaton missed nine-straight shots.
However, the Thunder went on an offensive streak of its own and scored 20 of the game's final 25 points to get the victory.
Senior guard
Lindsey Brenneman put up a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman forward
Lauren Graham tallied 15 points and six rebounds, and junior guard
Brooke Olson produced eight points and six assists.
Wheaton shot 21 of 47 from the field (45 percent), 6 of 13 from three-point range (46 percent) and 9 of 12 from the free throw line (75 percent). The visitors also held a 38-30 rebounds lead.
Clarke shot 18-for-59 from the field (30 percent), 3-for-16 from beyond the arc (19 percent) and 4-for-6 from the charity stripe (67 percent). Kaveria Allen led team with 12 points.
The Thunder return home for a 7 PM game on Saturday against Simpson College.
