Wheaton volleyball goes 4-0 in first place at the Wheaton Invitational

– The Thunder volleyball team posted a 4-0 record this weekend in winning the 2010 Wheaton Invitational. Both Wheaton and Benedictine were undefeated on the weekend, however, Wheaton won the tiebreaker with a 12-2 record in set-play and Benedictine was 12-3.

Wheaton junior Jenna McCallister and sophomore Cassie Murphy were both named to the all-tournament team.

Wheaton opened the tournament on Friday with a 3-0 victory against Franklin College, posting scores of 25-19, 25-17, 25-17). Freshman Hannah Graber led Wheaton with 14 kills and three total blocks. Cassie Murphy contributed 12 kills, with 13 digs and Hannah Velling added eight kills. Jenna McCallister distributed 41 assists and four service aces. Senior Ashlie Pace registered a team-high 24 digs and Kaitlyn Graham added 12 digs.

Wheaton was a 3-1 winner in its second game on Friday with scores of 25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 25-18 in the win. Velling and Buyse each had 12 kills, as Buyse added six total blocks. Murphy had nine kills, with four assisted blocks. McCallister recorded 42 assists and Pace added 22 digs.

On Saturday the Thunder topped Bowdoin, 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-18, 25-23) in the morning session. In the afternoon, Wheaton closed out the tournament with a 3-0 victory against Cornell College. Wheaton won the first set against the Rams 25-23, Wheaton posted a 30-28 victory in the second set and earned a 25-19 win in the third set.
