Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder men's soccer team played Aurora University to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night at Wheaton's Joe Bean Stadium. Tonight's result is Wheaton's second consecutive tie, following a 1-1 tie against Hope College last Saturday. Wheaton is now 2-1-2 on the season and Aurora is 3-2-1.
Wheaton went up 2-0 in the match, thanks to two first half goals. The first score of the match for the Thunder came in the 20th minute when a Wheaton player was tripped in the penalty box and junior
Drew Golz was awarded a penalty kick that he put past Spartan netminder Ethan Cashen. Wheaton's second goal game with 1:49 left in the first half when
Paul Pesek passed the ball into traffic in front of the net and
Dan Pavlak got the ball into the back of the net. Wheaton held a 2-0 advantage at the halftime intermission.
Aurora's Nick Helmer scored in the 62nd minute off of a Matt Houghtaylen assist to close Wheaton's advantage to 2-1. With just about four minutes remaining in regulation, Aurora's Christian Foote collected a pass from Helmer and scored for the Spartans to draw the match even at 2-2 at the 85:56 mark of the match.
Wheaton out-shot Aurora 5-1 in the first overtime, including consecutive shots by Wheaton's
Connor Rice and Pavlak less than two minutes into the overtime that were stopped by Cashen and Spartan defense. Wheaton out-shot the Spartans 6-1 during both of the overtime periods, but could not put a goal on the scoreboard.
Wheaton out-shot the Spartans 25-22 in the match, with an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. Thunder freshman
Ben Holtz played the first half of the match, making two saves with no goals allowed. Sophomore
Ryan Seager played the final 65 minutes of the match, with one save and two goals allowed. Cashen made nine saves and allowed two goals in 110 minutes of work in the Spartans' net.
Wheaton will travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado for its next two matches. The Thunder will face Carnegie Mellon University at 7:30 AM (MST) at Colorado College on Saturday, Sept. 18 and face Colorado College at 2:30 PM (MST) on Monday. Sept. 20.
