Men's basketball tops Millikin 65-61 at home

– The Wheaton men's basketball team picked up its fourth consecutive victory on Wednesday night with a 65-61 win at home against Millikin University. Wheaton is now 17-7 on the year, with a 9-4 record in CCIW play. With tonight's victory Wheaton has secured a spot in the four-team CCIW Men's Basketball Tournament that will be held on February 26-27 at the tournament's top-seeded team.

The Thunder led Millikin 37-27 at halftime of tonight's contest. Millikin cut the Wheaton advantage to four points at 65-61 with 19 seconds remaining in regulation. However, that was the closest the Big Blue had gotten in the second half and the guests could not trim the lead anymore as the final score was a 65-61 Thunder victory.

Junior guard Andrew Jahns led the Thunder with 18 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field, with two three-point field goals. Senior Ben Panner contributed 16 points, with five assists and two three-pointers. Sophomore forward Tim McCrary scored 11 points, with 10 rebounds for his ninth “double-double” of the season. McCrary also tallied nine assists, three blocked shots and two steals in the game. Sophomore forward Spencer Schultze scored 11 points, with five rebounds. Senior Jake Carwell snatched a career-high six steals in the game.

Joscar Demby led Millikin with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Charles Warren scored 11 points and Corey Mitchell added 10 points, with seven rebounds.

Wheaton shot a 46.4% (26-56) field goal percentage, with 33.3% (5-15) from three-point range and 72.7% (8-11) at the free throw line. Millikin shot 42.2% (27-64) from the floor, with 44.4% (4-9) from three-point range and 60% (3-5) at the charity stripe. Millikin out-rebound the Thunder 37-32, with a 16-11 edge on the offensive glass.

The Thunder will close out the regular season on Saturday night with a 7:30 PM tipoff at Elmhurst College.
