The Thunder men's basketball team defeats #21 UW-Whitewater, 92-66

Wheaton, Ill. - The Thunder men's basketball team won the 2010 Lee Pfund Classic in convincing fashion on Saturday night with a 92-66 victory against #21-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater in the championship game. Wheaton led 45-29 at halftime and continued its stellar play into the second half for the impressive victory.

After the score was tied 2-2 a little more than two minutes into the game, Wheaton scored 14 un-answered points to take a 14-2 lead with 14:16 left in the first half. Wheaton's proficient offense continued for the first half as the Thunder led 45-29 at halftime. Wheaton remained in control throughout the second half, as its lead never got smaller than 15 points and bulged to as much as 28 points.

Head coach Mike Schauer noted, “Tonight we played exceptionally well. I was just thrilled with our effort and execution and the guys' commitment to what we are doing and each other.”

Freshman Jon DeMoss led Wheaton with 24 points and four rebounds, as DeMoss shot 9-for-12 from the field. Tim McCrary scored 22 points, with nine rebounds and six assists. McCrary shot 11-of-13 from the field on the night. Senior Andrew Jahns scored 17 points, with five assists. Spencer Schultze scored 13 points, with six rebounds. Jeremy Pflederer scored 10 points for the hosts. McCrary was named the Will Landry Tournament MVP and Schultze was also an all-tournament section.

All-tournament selection DJ Dantzler led the Warhawks with 21 points. Fellow all-tournament pick Chris Davis scored 16 points, with eight rebounds.

Wheaton shot 59.7% (37-62) from the field, including 67.9% (19-28) in the second half. The Thunder shot 50% (6-12) from three-point range and 75% (12-16) at the free throw line. UW-Whitewater shot a 39% (23-59) field goal percentage, with 21.4% (3-14) from three-point range and 100% (17-17) at the free throw line. Each team collected 32 rebounds, with the Thunder holding a 10-6 edge on the offensive glass.

Wheaton is now 2-1 on the season. The Thunder will host Loras College on Tuesday night at 8 PM.
