Elmhurst, Ill. - The Wheaton College volleyball team finished 1-3 at the Elmhurst College Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The Thunder ran its record to 13-17 on the season.
Wheaton started Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Central (Iowa) College with scores of 25-23, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22. Setter
Jenna McCallister led the way offensively with team highs of 11 kills and 28 assists to go with 13 digs. Outside hitter
Hannah Velling added 19 kills and 1.5 blocks. Libero
Ashlie Pace totaled 22 digs and two aces as
Emily Hamilton also contributed 13 digs.
Emily Buys and
Cassie Murphy collected 1.5 blocks each.
For the third time this year, the Thunder took on University of Chicago. The No. 17-ranked Maroons emerged with a five-set victory 25-16, 25-23, 21-25, 19-25, 15-12. Murphy was the kill leader with 15, tied for the blocking lead with 3.5 and added 13 digs. Velling contributed 12 kills to aid the offensive attack. McCallister dished out 36 assists with 2.5 blocks. Pace tallied 30 digs and two aces.
Kaitlyn Graham scored a team-best five aces while Buyse picked up 3.5 blocks.
In the first match of Friday, University of Wisconsin-Platteville came away with the 3-1 victory over Wheaton by scores of 25-21, 25-21, 24-26, 25-14. Middle hitter
Emily Buyse put up big numbers with team highs of 16 kills and 2.5 blocks. Setter
Jenna McCallister dished out 41 assists along with one ace and 1.5 blocks. Outside hitter
Hannah Velling also got into the offensive attack with 11 kills. Libero
Ashlie Pace ended up with 30 digs and two aces while
Kaitlyn Graham totaled 17 digs.
Match two was a much dfferent story as Wheaton dominated Cornell College 3-1, with scores of 25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19. Buyse once again was the catalyst with 10 kills, three blocks and three aces. The Thunder servers piled up stats as McCallister also had three aces and
Hannah Graber added two of her own. McCallister's 42 assists and 24 digs also led the team. Pace collected 23 digs and Velling tallied nine kills.
Thunder volleyball will play its final match of the regular season at 7:00 PM on Tuesday versus Illinois Wesleyan University.
