Women's basketball outlasts Carthage 69-63 in overtime

- A pair of crucial three-pointers in overtime by Kathleen Fidelia and Laura Karsten gave the Wheaton College women's basketball team a 69-63 victory over Carthage College on Saturday. 

The Thunder improved to 15-9 overall and 10-3 in conference. Their win clinched the No. 2 seed for next week's CCIW Tournament.

The Lady Reds fell to 16-8 and 8-5 in conference play. They will need a win over Augustana College on Tuesday to get the No. 3 seed in the tournament.

Carthage held a 27-22 lead at the half, but the second half was back-and-forth all the way with a total of 14 lead changes and 11 ties. 

With 1:12 remaining in the game, Karsten netted the tying layup that sent the game into overtime with the score knotted at 59-59. 

In the overtime period, Karsten hit a go-ahead three-pointer to make it 64-61 with 2:04 left. Fidelia iced the game later with another three-pointer with only 12 seconds left. 

Wheaton shot 35.2 percent from the field in the game (25-of-71) but 11-of-12 from the free throw line. Fidelia led the team with 19 points and six assists while Karsten and Jamie Jones scored 15 points each. 

Carthage shot 40.4 percent in the game (21-of-52) and went 14-of-22 from the charity stripe. Katie Jarger led all scorers with 21 points while Lisa Gartelos added 14 points.
