Women's basketball falls in home opener 49-42 to University of Chicago

- The Wheaton College women's basketball team had its four-game win streak snapped with a 49-42 loss to University of Chicago on Wednesday.

The Thunder fell to 4-2 overall while the No. 22-ranked Maroons improved to 5-1.

In its season home opener, Wheaton's offense struggled in the first half, shooting only 5 of 27 (18.5 percent) from the field. But the hosts found themselves down only 22-15 at the half despite the shooting woes.

Chicago built its lead to 16 points with 13:46 remaining in the game when Wheaton slowly started to chip away at the lead. The Thunder became very aggressive with their full-court trap defense and rattled the Maroons' guards into making turnovers.

The double-digit lead dwindled down to five points with just under three minutes left in the game. However, crucial missed free throws and shot selection held Wheaton back from completing the rally.

Wheaton's defense forced 35 turnovers in the game as Chicago shot 18 of 46 (39 percent) from the field in the game. The Maroons also shot 2 of 11 from three-point range and 11 of 25 (44 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Thunder were led by Breanna Bohlen, who scored 10 points to go with 11 rebounds. Lissie McAlvey added eight points. Wheaton shot 14 of 58 (24 percent) from the field over the course of the game, including 2 of 24 (8 percent) from three-point range and 12 of 26 (46 percent) from the free throw line.

Wheaton continues its season next Wednesday with a 7:00 PM home game against Robert Morris College.
