Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder men's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie against Hope College on Saturday night at Joe Bean Stadium. With tonight's tie Wheaton is now 2-1-1 on the season and Hope,
ranked 22nd in Division III, is 3-0-1. The Thunder will play its first road contest of the year on Wednesday at 4 PM, against
12th-ranked Dominican University in River Forest. Wednesday's match will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at
www.wetn.org.
Wheaton out-shot the Flying Dutchmen 19-8 tonight, including a 7-1 advantage in 20 minutes of overtime. With 6:50 remaining in the first overtime a flurry of Wheaton opportunities were thwarted by Hope when the Thunder had multiple shot attempts that came up just short, including a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced out. Wheaton took four shots in the second overtime with strong opportunities, including a header with 3:50 left in the period that was saved from going into the net by a Hope defender. Hope's best scoring opportunity of the overtime came with 1:30 left in the second overtime when a shot attempt was tipped up by Thunder goalkeeper
Joe Selvaggio that helped secure the tie for his club.
Selvaggio made three saves in posting the shutout. Hope netminder Andrew Goorhouse made four saves in the Flying Dutchmen net. Hope had six corner kicks on the evening and Wheaton had three.
