Brittany Bergh broke through for two goals in the second half as Wheaton women's soccer defeated
Carleton College 2-0 on Saturday.
The Thunder improved to 3-0 on the season and ran their win streak to 48 straight games. The NCAA Division III record is 60 straight wins by Ohio Wesleyan. The Knights fell to 2-2 on the year.
After a spotty first five minutes, Wheaton took over the game on offense. The forwards and midfielders dominated the time of possession and produced a lot of good opportunities to score. Freshman forward
Jaime Orewiler had one of her shots hit the right post in the 40th minute, but the Thunder couldn't get the ball in the net. In total, Wheaton outshot Carleton 12-4 in the half, including a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Carleton's best chance to score came on an odd rush in the 11th minute, but goalkeeper
Ingrid Erickson ran to the attacker and deflected the ball wide inside the goalie box. Another near miss came with 36 minutes left in the second half as the ball almost rolled into the goal after a collision at the top of the goalie box.
With two bullets already dodged, Wheaton's offense turned on the pressure again. Forward
Taryne Lee blasted a left footer that was blocked by the goalkeeper, but Bergh followed the rebound and knocked in the goal at 56:31.
The one-goal cushion gave Wheaton renewed confidence and Bergh struck again at 63:24. The sophomore forward made nifty dribbles to get through three defenders and the goalie to score from in close on the right side unassisted.
Lee picked up her first assist of the year while Bergh tallied her first two goals of the season. Wheaton outshot Carleton 27-7 in the game and dominated corner kicks 16-3. Erickson made four saves to preserve the shutout.
Wheaton's next game is on the road Sept. 13 at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.
